Brian shows an essay from a student-- and highlights some of the writing
How can an English teacher "communicate" with a student about his/her writing?
Write comments on paper
Maybe speak with student for a minute before class
BUT-- WHAT IF you could speak to every student-- the moment you grade the essay? AND/OR if kids could peer edit/reflect?
Use notebook layout to record audio files directly into the document
To access the menu-- go to view--> Notebook view
To record audio-- Click on the Record button
Embeds audio directly into document
Logistics:
Brian uses a shared server place to house essays-- Allows access for him and all students
Students choose two other students' essays to read and give audio feedback on, then saved back to server
Now every student has his/her own essay with comments
Brian embeds audio comments for students, too
Students use comments to improve writing and resubmit essay
Helping students to improve their writing/grammar:
Students submit audio comments (through the shared server) - Brian responds in audio format to the question.
Q&A is then available for all students
Q&A with Brian:
Can you go between Notebook and "Regular" view? Yes, but you might lose some formatting.
Do you use online writing portfolios? No yet....
